40th Anniversary & Book Launch

Mundy and his Galway Girls

On August 26th famous singer and musician Mundy performed to a capacity audience in Barrack Square. VMware celebrated ten years of technical support in Ballincollig. 15 of our actresses dramatised his most famous song ‘The Galway Girl’.

Hey Mundy…

You ain’t ever seen nothing like our Scoil Mhuire Girls!!!

The Galway Girl

I took a stroll down the old long walk
Of the day I-ay-I-ay
I met a little girl and we stopped to talk
On a grand soft day I-ay

And I ask you friends, what’s a fella to do?
Because her hair was black and her eyes were blue
And I knew right then, I’d be takin a whirl
Down the Salthill Prom with a Galway Girl

We’re halfway there when the rain came down
On the day I-ay-I-ay
And she took me up to her flat downtown
On a grand soft day I-ay

And I ask you friends, what’s a fella to do?
Because her hair was black and her eyes were blue
So I took her hand, and I gave her a twirl
And I lost my heart to a Galway Girl

When I woke up I was all alone
With a broken heart and a ticket home
And I ask you friend, what would you do?
If her hair was black and her eyes were blue

See I’ve travelled around, I’ve been all over the world
Boys
I’ve never seen nothin like a Galway girl – Hey!

The New School Playground

Our fabulous school playground was built in September 2015 with funding from the annual school walk that was organised by the Parents and Friends Association. It marks our school’s 40th anniversary.

In 2004, the World Health Organisation recommended that high quality playground equipment should be made available to students for improved physical activity and fitness. An article by Claire Hennigan, appeared in the Irish Teacher’s Journal in 2015, emphasizing the importance and benefits of students having access to top quality playground equipment in schools in Ireland. We are delighted with our new playground equipment. Every day it enhances our children’s health and physical development. It is a core element of our health promotion framework.

The children in every class, from Junior Infants to sixth class, enjoy their weekly slot at the playground.

In the words of our students:

“It makes lunchtimes more enjoyable”

“We get to play with our friends in a new way”

“There are lots of different tasks to do”

“It is super-safe!”

“The colour blends in with the school environment”

“It is great fun!”

“We don’t mind waiting for our turn…it’s worth waiting for”

What some of the teachers have to say:

The girls love their day on the playground. They don’t forget!”

“The equipment is sturdy, well built and safe, it will be there long after the current students have moved on from Scoil Mhuire”

“I enjoy seeing an improvement in climbing skills and balance, particularly with the younger children”

“I’m so excited about it, I would to try it out myself” says Bean Uí Shuilleabháin
(Deputy Principal)

Robotics Competetion

Congratulations to the girls of Rang VI who did themselves and their school proud at the Vex IQ Challenge Final in CIT on Friday February 6th.

The Scoil Mhuire robotics team, ‘The Technobots’, were awarded the ‘Design Award’ for their robot, ‘Robbie’.

The Robotics team was comprised of eighteen sixth class pupils who began work on this project last October.

Programming, building, researching, designing and assembling were only a few of the skills the children developed and used to be successful in the first robotics competition of its kind for primary schools.
