On Wednesday 31st of January 2018 we bid farewell to our caretaker Jimmy Healy. Jimmy first started working in Scoil Mhuire in 1993 and went on to spend more than 24 years working with us! As well as fulfilling his role of caretaker , Jimmy was a very important member of the Scoil Mhuire community. His rendition of Oh Holy Night at the Christmas Carol Service will be forever etched in our memories. On Jimmy’s last day in Scoil Mhuire the pupils and staff came together in the halla to show Jimmy our appreciation for all his years of service. The pupils in each class had written their own poetry about Jimmy and a sample were read aloud . The whole school sang a rendition of “Ob la di Ob la da Life goes on” by the Beatles and Jimmy joined in with some other familiar tunes. The school then unveiled a beautiful, stone bird table in the school yard in memory of all Jimmy’s work in the school grounds and also in feeding and caring for the birds. There was also a presentation on behalf of the Parents and Friends association by Lena Askoy and from the board of management by Fr George. We will all miss Jimmy and we wish him health happiness and good luck in the future.
We are delighted in Scoil Mhuire to have our recent success in the Dell Robotics IQ competition featured in some of our local news publications The Evening Echo, The Muskerry News, The Corkman and the Ballincollig newsletter. Check out our wonderful pupils in the links below.
On Wednesday the 17th of January a team of 21 girls from 5th and 6th class took part in the held in the Cork Institute of Technology. Over 20 teams from various schools took part in this event on the 17th, the first day of a three day event. The girls have been working hard with their teachers Iníon Uí Lomasna and Iníon Uí Dhonnabhaín on designing, building and programming a robot since September. There were many tasks to be completed throughout the day e.g. a presentation to the judges on their STEM project which was on the use of robotics in the medical field. They also competed against other schools’ robots in various competitions. Our school has been taking part in this event since it began in January 2014. This year the Scoil Mhuire team won the ‘Design Award’ and also secured a place in the finals on the 1st of March. It is has been a great experience for our pupils so far to showcase all they have learnt over the last few months and we look forward to another opportunity to do this in the finals in March. Well done to everyone involved. Watch this space for further updates, the exciting is mounting!
On the 20th of December , 2017 the church of St Mary and St John was alive with the sound of music from the wonderful pupils of Scoil Mhuire. Each class level came together and sang or performed two Christmas songs ranging from the more traditional Christmas Carols to more contemporary festive tunes . The children displayed their many talents from button accordion and tin whistle playing to mine and dance combined with song. Our school care taker Jimmy also joined all the pupils for a beautiful whole school finale rendition of “Oh holy night”. Everyone left full of the Christmas Spirit. A big thank you to all the pupils and staff for all their hard work and preparation.

The preparations for the Vex Robotics competition are well and truly under way in Scoil Mhuire. Students from 5th and 6th class have been working on building our Stretch Robot and programming it for competition. The girls have also been researching the use of technology in the everyday lives of people and just how useful it really is. We are learning so much each week and are enjoying every step of the process. We are very proud of the Robotics team and are very excited for the Vex Robotics Primary School competition which will take place in CIT in January 2018.
We are all ready for Halloween at Scoil Mhuire! We had a very exciting day on Friday – children were allowed to dress up for Halloween. Some teachers even joined in the fun. We raised some money for our PFA.
We hope everyone stays safe over the mid term break and has a well deserved rest following all the hard work of September and October!
