Active school week was a success this year. The whole week was active and fun and sports day was particularly exciting for everyone! We hope you enjoy these snippets of all the fun!
Next week it will be Active School Week here at Scoil Mhuire. We aim to include a variety of fun activities that everyone can enjoy. The girls will need to wear their track suit all week. We have a lot of activities planned, including:
- Dance at 10;
- Dance Fit;
- Jigsaw Relays;
- Teddy Bears Picnic (Infant classes);
- School Circuit;
- Table Tennis (rang 3);
- Run 1k in a day;
- “Sports for All Day” is planned for Tuesday!
Let’s keep our fingers crossed for some fine weather. Check back on the school blog for reviews of the activities and some pictures of the children in action!
On April 27th we had a scoot/cycle/walk to school day. Our Greenschools Committee is working on our fourth Green Flag, which is “Travel”. The objective of this flag is to raise awareness among children, adults and the wider community about the benefits of walking, cycling, scooting and exercise in general. There are also huge environmental benefits! With the weather on our side and sun shining brightly, we had a great turn out this morning. Below are a sample of photos which show the fun that was had by all.

Our fabulous school playground was built in September 2015 with funding from the annual school walk that was organised by the Parents and Friends Association. It marks our school’s 40th anniversary.
In 2004, the World Health Organisation recommended that high quality playground equipment should be made available to students for improved physical activity and fitness. An article by Claire Hennigan, appeared in the Irish Teacher’s Journal in 2015, emphasizing the importance and benefits of students having access to top quality playground equipment in schools in Ireland. We are delighted with our new playground equipment. Every day it enhances our children’s health and physical development. It is a core element of our health promotion framework.
The children in every class, from Junior Infants to sixth class, enjoy their weekly slot at the playground.
In the words of our students:
“It makes lunchtimes more enjoyable”
“We get to play with our friends in a new way”
“There are lots of different tasks to do”
“It is super-safe!”
“The colour blends in with the school environment”
“It is great fun!”
“We don’t mind waiting for our turn…it’s worth waiting for”
What some of the teachers have to say:
“The girls love their day on the playground. They don’t forget!”
“The equipment is sturdy, well built and safe, it will be there long after the current students have moved on from Scoil Mhuire”
“I enjoy seeing an improvement in climbing skills and balance, particularly with the younger children”
“I’m so excited about it, I would like to try it out myself” says Bean Uí Shuilleabháin
Active School Flag
Our Active Flag has arrived !
Scoil Mhuire has just received its Active Flag! The girls and teachers have been working extremely hard all year to keep active and to promote physical activity in our school day. We introduced lots of new fun activities like – ‘Dance at Ten’, ‘Funday Monday’ and ‘Friendsday Wednesday’. We have started a new running challenge in the senior classes where we run a kilometre and record it on our chart. We are hoping to run a full marathon!!
While working towards this Active Flag it has made us realise how easy it is to keep active and how fun it can be. On rainy days we do ‘Bizzy Breaks’ or ‘Just Dance’ to get us moving.
Our Active Flag motto is – Health is the Prize, When you Exercise.
