Sports

At Scoil Mhuire, sport is an important part of school life. We believe that participation in sport helps our pupils to develop confidence, teamwork, resilience and a lifelong love of physical activity. We are committed to providing a broad, inclusive and enjoyable sporting programme where every girl has the opportunity to participate and achieve success.

Gaelic games have a special place in our school community. Our girls enthusiastically participate in both ladies’ football and camogie throughout the year. We are extremely fortunate to welcome GAA coach Pearse from Ballincollig GAA each week, whose expert coaching helps our pupils to develop their skills while fostering a love of the games. 2026  was a particularly memorable year,  as our football team achieved great success by winning the Sciath na Scol Football Final, a wonderful achievement that made our entire school community proud.

Athletics is another area in which Scoil Mhuire thrives. Our pupils regularly participate in a variety of athletic events and competitions, demonstrating determination, commitment and sportsmanship.  Annual success at many Cork City Sports events are a feature of the sporting life of our school – in 2026 our girls were crowned Overall Best Group – a fantastic accomplishment for our school.

Soccer continues to be an important part of our sporting programme, and 2026 marked an exciting new chapter for soccer in Scoil Mhuire as, for the first time, we took part in the U-13 Primary Cork Cup, a fantastic new FAI competition for primary schools across Cork, where we reached the semi finals. A great achievement, in our first year entering the competition! We also entered 2 teams in the FAI 5 a side soccer blitz, where one of our teams won their section and progressed to the finals.

In addition to these activities, our pupils have opportunities to experience a variety of other sports, including badminton, gymnastics, dance and rowing. Through our weekly Physical Education lessons, every child is encouraged to explore different activities, discover new talents and develop positive attitudes towards health and wellbeing.

One of the highlights of the school year is our annual Active Week, which takes place each June. Throughout the week, the girls enjoy a range of fun and engaging physical activities that promote fitness, teamwork and wellbeing. Active Week culminates in our much anticipated Sports Day, which is undoubtedly one of our pupils’ favourite days of the year. Filled with friendly competition, fun races, team events and plenty of school spirit, Sports Day provides lasting memories for pupils and staff alike.

Our approach to sport and physical activity is closely aligned with the Primary School Curriculum, supporting the holistic development of each child through the Physical Education strand while promoting physical, social, emotional and personal growth. Through a wide variety of activities and experiences, we encourage all pupils to develop the skills, confidence and positive attitudes needed to lead active and healthy lives.
